    Job Summary
    Reporting to and under the general direction of the Executive Chef, the Sous Chef is responsible for managing and overseeing the daily ordering, production, cooking, portioning, and temperatures of food items being served within the various University Culinary Services operations and venues. The Sous Chef is responsible for overseeing the cleaning, sanitizing and assisting in the maintenance of culinary equipment and is responsible for maintaining clean and organized work areas. The Sous Chef is responsible for the supervision, instruction, training, performance evaluation, hiring, and disciplinary actions for full time bargaining unit employees and student staff, including maintaining service records, and the solving of work problems.
    Key Qualifications
    This position requires the equivalent of 2 years of experience performing duties as a Sous Chef, along with 2 years of progressively responsible and applicable management and/or supervisory experience. A culinary degree/certificate from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and/or experience to provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position. Previous experience supervising and training unskilled and semiskilled workers is strongly preferred. Intermediate proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) required. Knowledge of Google Suite and EATAC or similar automated food management system preferred. The incumbent must possess and/or obtain and thereafter maintain a California Driver's License valid for the operation of any vehicle or equipment required to maintain and operate. The incumbent must also possess and thereafter maintain a food safety manager certification, which has been accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) or be able to obtain within 60 days of hire.
    Salary and Benefits
    Starting salary placement depends on qualifications and experience and is anticipated to be in the range of $4,834 to $5,671 a month. This position is a member of the Management Personnel Plan and serves at the pleasure of the President.
    This position is eligible for a broad range of benefits, including medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurances, retirement (CalPERS), tuition waiver, vacation and sick leave. In addition, 14 paid holidays are offered each year; 13 scheduled on specific days and a Personal Holiday that may be taken any time during the year.
