The Department
For nearly half a century, Sonoma State University's Department of Art and Art History has been the hub of visual art on campus and in Sonoma County. As a center of creativity and experimentation, the department provides rigorous undergraduate education in the study and practice of the visual arts. Our programs offer in-depth instruction in technique, concept, and history of art.
Our students pursue studies leading to the BA and BFA degrees in art studio or the BA degree in art history. Art studio degree emphases are available in ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and works on paper. Committed to the recognition of individuality and unique accomplishment, faculty work closely with students to encourage personal direction and ideas. We strive to create a diverse and inclusive faculty serving an increasingly diverse student body.
Designed specifically for the pursuit of studio art practices and the study of art history and museum and gallery studies, the department facilities are located in one of the best equipped physical plants within the California State University system. The Art Building has a total of 46,604 square feet of space with an instructional net of 30,485 square feet and includes specialized studios for the study of Ceramics, Digital Media, Painting, Printmaking, Photography and Sculpture, and includes a wood shop, welding studio, and bronze foundry.
The Department is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.

Duties of the Position
Applicants for the position of Visiting Assistant Professor of Sculpture will be expected to teach 12 units per semester from the following Studio Art courses and be familiar with the safe use of tools, equipment, and techniques used in the related areas: 3D Fundamentals; Beginning Sculpture; Intermediate and Advanced Sculpture-including woodworking, welding and metal fabrication, casting and foundry; art theory; and B.F.A. seminars. Successful candidates are expected to participate in faculty evaluation of advanced and B.F.A. students and serve as a respectful mentor and advisor to students. Applicants are expected to have an engagement with contemporary issues of sculpture, and a thorough knowledge of the history of sculpture. We are seeking an individual with a strong commitment to student engagement and the capacity to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, as well as with the ability to reach diverse learners while creating an inclusive classroom environment. A teaching practice that focuses equally on conceptual ideas and a materials-based approach to artmaking.
Professional Qualifications
To be recommended for appointment, the candidate must have:


  • M.F.A. in Sculpture;
  • Two or more years teaching experience at the college level in courses similar to those described;
  • Knowledge about the use of facilities available on our campus including bronze and aluminum foundry, metal and wood shops;
  • Have demonstrated commitment, ability, and experience working with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff, as well as the ability to create a welcoming and inclusive classroom environment;
  • A strong record of exhibition on the regional and/or national levels;
  • Professional and technical experience in studio art, and experience in preparing students in art theory, critical discourse, and important issues in contemporary art;
  • Working knowledge of issues related to sculpture along with contemporary and historical artists nationally and internationally working in the field.

    Rank and Salary
    The rank is Assistant Professor. The salary for this position is: $72,000.
